No. 22 Nationally Ranked Softball Takes Two At Dominican, 4-2, 2-1

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The No. 22 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University softball team continued its win streak, sweeping Dominican College, 4-2 and 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls improved to 8-0 on the year with the sweep.

In game one the Owls fell behind early in the first inning when Dominican scored twice.

Southern quickly rallied in the fourth inning when Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) doubled, sending in teammates Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.), evening the score at 2-2.

The Owls struck again in the sixth inning when Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) smacked a triple down the right field line sending in Buch and junior Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.), putting the team up 4-2.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) was credited with the win, allowing only one earned run with five strikeouts.

In game two of the doubleheader Dominican struck first in the third inning with a single up the middle scoring a run to go up 1-0.

The Owls found a way to rally again in the fifth inning when senior Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) scored on a passed ball.  Bucko followed suit hitting a triple into right center scoring pinch runner Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) putting Southern up 2-1.

Dominican threatened in the sixth inning with two runners on base, but Southern fielded a double play to end the inning with the lead.

Bucko ended the game 3-for-4 batting with a RBI.

Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) notched her third win of the season only allowing four hits and fanning three batters to help secure the win.

Southern is back in action Saturday, March 17 when they travel Brookville, N.Y. for a doubleheader against C.W. Post. The games are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
