Field Hockey Kicks Off Conference Play This Week

CONFERENCE PLAY KICKS OFF
The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team begins Northeast-10 Conference play this week with games against Merrimack and Franklin Pierce. The week begins with the final contest in a three-game homestand as the Warriors visit on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Owls then travel to Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 4 p.m.

HOME AT LAST
The Owls made the most of their first home game of the year after five on the road to open the season. Freshman Bailey McGinnis scored early in the second half with the eventual game-winner in a 3-2 triumph over AIC on Sept. 12.

SUCCESSFUL ON PENALTY STROKES
As a team, the Owls have been awarded three penalty strokes this year and have converted all three. Randi Schock has netted two goals, with Sarah Cebry tallying the other.

CEBRY RANKS AMONG NORTHEAST-10 LEADERS
Sarah Cebry is currently tied for the league lead with 10 goals and ranks third with 21 points on the year.

MOVING UP THE RANKS
Thanks to goals in each of the Owls' two games last week, Cebry has now moved into sixth place on the Owls' all-time scoring chart with 30 career goals. Carlie McDermott is next on the list with 31 goals.

A DAY FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
Junior Sarah Cebry set a new Southern Connecticut single-game record with five goals in the 5-1 win over St. Michael's on Sept. 8.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST TIME OUT
Junior Sarah Cebry scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year, but a late surge by the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team came up just short in a 2-1 loss to St. Anselm at Jess Dow Field. The Hawks scored the only goal of the first half just over five minutes into action. Despite chances for both teams, the game stayed that way into the second half. St. Anselm extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal just over six minutes into the second frame. SCSU countered when Cebry connected on a penalty stroke with 15:34 remaining. The Owls maintained strong pressure for most of the final minutes, but were unable to connect for the tying goal.

OWLS OFFENSE KICKING INTO GEAR
SCSU is averaging 2.8 goals per game over the last six contests after being blanked in the 2012 season opener.

ALL-TIME AGAINST MERRIMACK
Southern Connecticut holds a 16-8 all-time lead in the series with Merrimack.

The Owls hold a 14-11 lead in the all-time series with Franklin Pierce.

A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST GAME WITH MERRIMACK
Freshman goalie Nicole Scionti made a career-high 15 saves, but the team lost a 5-0 decision at No. 7 nationally ranked Merrimack on Sept. 22, 2011. Merrimack took the lead just 3:12 into the game and went on to score four times before the break. The Warriors added one second half goal to make it a 5-0 final.

A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST GAME WITH  FPU
Senior Ryan Morgan tallied a goal and freshman goalkeeper Nicole Scionti finished with 12 saves, but the Owls dropped a 5-1 decision to Franklin Pierce on Sept. 20, 2011 at Jess Dow Field. The contest was scoreless for the first 20 minutes, but Franklin Pierce struck first on a goal from Tia Levins with 14:31 left in the opening stanza. The score stayed that way as both teams headed into the intermission.The Ravens then added four goals in a 15 minute stretch in the second half, including three from Levins. Morgan put the Owls on the scoreboard on a tally with 5:35 remaining off an Owls' penalty corner.

LENDING A HELPING HAND
Freshman Bailey McGinnis had two assists in the game with St. Michael's to boost her team-leading total to four in that department. She's also second on the team with eight points.

DONALDSON RESPONDING IN THE CAGE
Junior Robin Donaldson recorded her first win of the year against St. Michael's. She is 1-1 with a 1.59 goals against average and a 812 save percentage so far in 2012.

WIN NO. 1 IN THE BOOKS
Freshman goalkeeper Audrey Doloff recorded 11 saves to earn her first collegiate victory in the game against Assumption. Classmate Marisa McCann notcher her first collegiate win on Sept. 12 in the 3-2 win over AIC. She finished with 11 saves in the contest.

THE CAPTAINS
Paige Donlin, Meghan Lahm and Erica Fisher will serve as team captains this year.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
SCSU was selected 10th in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, as voted by the league's coaches.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome nine newcomers to this year's squad - Audrey Dolloff, Jennifer O'Neill, Kayla Quinn, Anna Marcucilli, Katie Gontarski, Lauren Anderson, Bailey McGinnis, Marisa McCann and Cathlyn Pistolas.

ANOTHER SEASON IN THE BOOKS
The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team closed the 2011 season with a 5-13 record. The Owls just missed out on qualifying for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

DUO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Juniors Laurie Cockerline and Paige Donlin were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey All-Academic Team following the conclusion of the season. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average, have completed at least one year at their institution and be a starter or key reserve.

OWLS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM
Ten members of the squad were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom in 2011-12. Student-athletes must post a 3.0 semester grade point average in order to be eligible for the honor.

SEVEN  OWLS HONORED BY NFHCA
Seven members of the squad – Sarah Cebry, Laurie Cockerline, Paige Donlin, Erica Fisher, Meghan Lahm, Ryan Morgan, and Katy Williams - were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.

TEAM HONORED BY NFHCA
For the fourth year in a row, the Owls were recognized with National Academic Team honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The National Academic Team Award recognized those institutions that achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.

FISHER PACES THE OFFENSE
Senior Erica Fisher led the Owls last season in scoring with 27 points (12 goals, three assists). Those totals were career-highs for Fisher.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on Sept. 29 when they travel to UMass-Lowell at 1 p.m.
