SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior
Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal 7:35 into overtime to give the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team a 5-4 victory over American International College on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory was the second in a row - and second that required extra time - and helped SCSU improve to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play. AIC is now 5-4, 0-1 in league action.
With 10:34 remaining in regulation, sophomore
Lauren Anderson (Cheshire, Conn.) scored her second goal of the afternoon to force the eventual extra frame. In the overtime,
Zoe Fanolis (Hamden, Conn.) assisted Cebry on the game-winning goal.
Anderson opened the scoring the contest with a goal that came with 9:13 remaining in the opening half. AIC tied the score on a marker from Emily Chang just about three minutes later, but
Meghan Lahm (Wingdale, N.Y.) put the Owls' back in front with her first collegiate goal. The Yellow Jackets received a goal from Kayla Harbin off a penalty corner after time expired in the opening half to send the teams in halftime tied at 2-2.
AIC went in front on a goal from Jenna Masionis just 46 seconds into the second half.
Jaime Matson (East Hartland, Conn.) scored off an assist from Anderson, who had a career-high five points on the afternoon, to knot the score again at 3-3.
Masionis answered just 42 seconds after Matson's goal, but the Owls would score the final two goals of the game to secure the win.
Goalie
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) finished with 10 saves in the contest to earn the victory.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a game at St. Michael's.
