NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal off a feed from
Jaime Matson (East Hartland, Conn.) with 15:39 remaining as the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team posted a 3-2 win over Assumption on Tuesday evening.
Matson finished with a career-best five points and figured in on all three Owls' goals on the night.
The Owls improved to 3-9 overall and 3-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win. Assumption is now 4-9 overall and 0-5 in league action.
Matson opened the scoring just 1:42 into play when she connected on a rebound off an Owls' penalty corner.
Assumption tied the game just under five minutes later on a goal from Stacia Tympanick. However, Matson struck again off a penalty corner only 3:44 after the Greyhounds goal. This time, she redirected a shot from
Marita Brothers (Stafford, Conn.) into the cage.
Alicia Morgan (Stafford, Conn.) also assisted on the goal.
The visitors tied the game up with 16:40 left in the first half on a goal from Taylor Chase. From there, the contest remained tied for more than 36 minutes.
The winning goal came after a long pass that Matson chased down on the right wing. She crossed a pass to a cutting Cebry, who knocked the ball home past the Assumption goalie.
Owls' goalkeeper
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) turned away 12 shots in the contest to earn the win. Nine of those stops came in the second half, as the Greyhounds applied late pressure looking for the equalizer.
The Owls are back in action on Thursday night for a home game against Franklin Pierce.
