NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On an afternoon when the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team honored its five seniors prior to its game against Mercy, two second half goals from Owls' freshman Kristi Montemurro (New Milford, Conn.) proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over the Mavericks.

The Owls improved to 5-12 on the year with the win, while Mercy dropped to 4-12.

Montemurro broke a 1-1 tie with just over 11 minutes elapsed in the second half as she converted off a feed from fellow classmate Zoe Fanolis (Hamden, Conn.). Then, with 14:40 remaining, Montemurro knocked in the rebound of a Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) shot to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Mavericks received a goal from Marissa Kluber with just under 10 minutes remaining but would get no closer.

The two teams traded first half goals. Cebry got the Owls on the board with her 15th goal of the year only 5:48 into play. However, Yolie Nyero scored with 6:51 remaining in the first half to tie the score.

Goalie Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) finished with five saves in the victory.

The Owls close the regular season on Saturday with a non-conference road game against Franklin Pierce.
