Softball Splits With Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team split today with Assumption at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

The Owls won game one, 5-0, and lost game two, 5-4.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched a complete game to lead the Owls to the victory in game one. Cockrill went 7.0 innings while allowing no runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.



SCSU (6-6) quickly took a 1-0 lead with an RBI double from Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) in the first inning.

The Owls then tacked on two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) and Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) each hit solo home runs in the fifth to make it 3-0.

In the sixth, Muscarella had an RBI single and then Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0.

In game two, the game was tied 1-1 until Assumption (4-10) scored three runs in the fifth inning on two errors. The runs were scored when Lauren Medeiros had an RBI single, Tayna Robiudoux scored on an error, and Jessica DiPilato had an RBI single.

SCSU fought back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI double from Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) and Muscarella had a two-run single to tie the game 4-4.



In the sixth, Assumption would go ahead for good after Robuidoux hit a solo home run to center field.

Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got the loss for SCSU going 5.2 innings while allowing five runs and two earned, on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
