NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) went six scoreless innings as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team defeated Assumption, 8-0 (six innings), at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

Van Alphen went six innings while allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.



After the Owls (7-6, 2-1 NE-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first, they scored six runs off of starter Jen Lattal for Assumption (4-11, 1-2 NE-10).

Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) made it 3-0 with a two-run triple down the left field line.

SCSU made it 4-0 when Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) reached on an error, scoring Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.).



In the next at-bat, Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) then hit a two-run home run to make it 6-0 and put the game out of reach.

Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) also had an RBI single.

Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) led SCSU going 3-for-3 with three hits and 1 RBI. Downs and Koerner both chipped in 2 hits with 2 RBI.
