WATERBURY, Conn. – Sophomores
Sarah Muise (Killingworth, Conn.) and
Emily Orser (Hamden, Conn.) each finished with four goals to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 win over Post University in non-conference action on Thursday.
The Owls improve to 1-5 on the year with the win, while Post drops to 1-7.
It was a game that the Owls led for all but 3:03 of. SCSU never trailed in the game, although Post did even the score at 4-4 and 6-6 in the first half.
Southern Connecticut started with an offensive flurry, as it tallied four of the first five goals of the game. Muise opened the scoring only 31 seconds in, and added another goal just over three minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0.
Post answered with a marker before Muise and
Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass.) netted consecutive goals to push the score to 4-1.
The Eagles answered with three straight markers to even the contest at 4-4. Orser countered with back-to-back goals in a 42 second stretch to allow the Owls to regain the lead.
Post responded with two goals in 1:09 to force another tie at 6-6. Shaw's second of the game with 2:24 in the opening half gave the Owls the lead for good.
The visitors held a 7-6 lead at the intermission and then added the first three goals of the second half – scores from Orser, Muise and
Katie Walter (Woodbridge, Conn.) – to give the Owls their largest lead of the game at 10-6.
Post scored the next two goals, but would get no closer than two the rest of the way. The Owls maintained possession for most of the final 15 minutes.
Emily Tooker (Eastport, N.Y.), Orser and
Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) would notch goals down the stretch to allow the Owls to secure the win.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday for a home game against Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m.
