Muscarella Game-Winner Leads Owls To Sweep Queens, 8-0 and 5-4 (10 Innings)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) had a game-winning single today as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team defeated Queens in two games at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

SCSU won game one 8-0 in five innings and won game two, 5-4, in 10 innings.

In game one, the Owls (14-8) began the scoring with three runs in the third innings after Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) had an RBI single, and Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) hit a two-run home run.

In the fifth, the Owls scored five runs highlighted by RBI singles from Brittany Bucko (Wallington, Conn.) and Marden, and a two-run single from Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.).

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Conn.) got the win for SCSU with a complete game going 4.2 innings while allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

In game two, the Owls led 3-0 going to the sixth inning before Queens scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead.

The four runs were highlighted by a two-run home run from Kaitlyn Crowley and Queens (1-11) went ahead when Caroline Carbone scored on a wild pitch.

SCSU tied it up 4-4 when Bucko hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Muscarella. Bucko led the Owls going 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and one run.



The game remained tied until Muscarella singled to shortstop, scoring Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.).

Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the win going 5.0 innings while allowing one run, none earned, with two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got a no decision going 5.0 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts.
