Final Stats

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team rallied from a second half deficit with six consecutive goals en route to an 11-8 victory over Mercy on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Emily Orser (Hamden, Conn.) finished with five points (four goals, one assist) for the Owls, while classmate Sarah Muise (Killingworth, Conn.) contributed four points (three goals, one assist).

The Owls are now 2-10 overall, while Mercy dropped to 6-4.

Today's effort marked the second time in the last three games that Southern Connecticut held an opponent to nine goals or less. The last occurrence in which the Owls merited eight or fewer goals was a 20-8 win over AIC on March 25, 2008.

For the second time in three games, the Owls also trailed by a goal at halftime, as they did against Queens on Tuesday. Muise scored her first of the game on a free position shot just 1:59 into the second half, but Mercy went back in front just over two minutes later.

Southern Connecticut seized control of the game from there by netting six straight goals. Muise found the back of the net twice in a nine second span to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 7-6 lead. Orser then sandwiched a pair of goals around single tallies from Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) and Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass.) to cap the spurt.

Mercy added two late goals but could get no closer than three in an 11-8 final.

The Owls started off the game strong. Cebry opened the scoring just under three minutes in before Mercy countered to tie the game. However, two goals from Orser and one from Katie Walter (Woodbridge, Conn.) allowed SCSU to build a 4-1 cushion. The Mavericks scored the final four goals of the half to carry a 5-4 lead into the break.

Nora Anderson (Stratford, Conn.) stopped six shots to earn her first win as an Owl.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Wednesday for a road game at AIC.
