BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. - Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) hurled a three-hitter in the second game as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept two Northeast-10 Conference Southwest division games from Pace on Wednesday, 9-3 and 2-1.
Van Alphen went seven innings for SCSU while allowing one run with four walks and five strikeouts in the 2-1 win in game two.
Van Alphen had three 1-2-3 innings and was able to get two double plays to preserve the win.
In game one, the Owls offense put up the run support and defeated Pace, 9-3.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win for SCSU (28-17, 13-5 NE-10 SW) going seven innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Chelsea Shea got the loss for Pace (14-20, 9-17 NE-10 SW), going three innings and allowing five runs, seven hits and two walks.
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) led SCSU going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs while
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) also went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Jeane Drury led Pace going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hana Wright was 3- for-3.
Pace led 2-1 after the first inning, but the Owls scored two runs in the second to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Bucko made it 2-2 with an RBI double to left field, scoring
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) from second base.
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) then had an RBI groundout to make it 3-2.
The Owls then scored three runs in the fourth to give them a 6-2 lead. Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif. ) had an RBI sacrifice fly and Downs had a two-run two-out single to make it 6-2.
Pouliot then made it 7-2 with a solo home run in the fifth, but Pace did threaten in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Katie Lange drew a RBI walk to make it 7-3. Cockrill then got out of the inning with a double play.
In game two, the game was a pitching duel by both sides with SCSU scoring two runs in the third.
Van Alphen got the win, while Jeane Drury got the loss for Pace going seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Downs led SCSU going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Natalie Gellos led Pace going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
After Bucko doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs, Buch made it 1-0 with an RBI groundout, scoring
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.). Downs later had a two-out RBI double down the right field line, scoring Bucko to make it 2-0.
Van Alphen was rolling until the sixth inning when Pace tried to ahead. Pace had the bases loaded with no outs, and would make it 2-1 when Natalie Gellos had an RBI single to right field. Van Alphen then settled down and got Samantha Garcia to hit into an inning ending double play.
Pace would have a chance in the seventh, but Van Alphen got a double play to end the threat.
