NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman
Jaime Matson (East Hartland, Conn.) flipped home her own rebound with 2:07 remaining in the first overtime to give the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team a dramatic 3-2 win over Saint Anselm in the Owls' Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
Southern Connecticut moved to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in NE-10 play with the win. Saint Anselm is now 2-4, 0-2 in league action.
SCSU held a 2-0 lead with less than four minutes remaining until the Hawks' Elizabeth Sears netted two goals in a span of 39 seconds to even the score and force overtime.
Sears had a chance to net the game-winner on a point blank chance early in the overtime, but Owls' goalie
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) responded with one of her 15 saves to keep the game tied. That set the stage for Matson's heroics. She took an initial shot that was saved by Saint Anselm's Shauna Whittemore, but Matson followed the rebound and flipped a second bid over Whittemore into an empty cage for the winner.
Southern Connecticut opened the scoring with 5:13 remaining in the first half on a goal from
Kristi Montemurro (New Milford, Conn.).
Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) carried the ball into the circle on the right wing and fed Montemurro at the far post, who redirected the pass into the cage.
The Owls extended the lead to two goals 9:21 into the second half courtesy of a penalty stroke goal from Cebry. Her shot was partially blocked by Whittemore, and then ricocheted off the crossbar before falling into the back of the net. It was Cebry's fifth goal of the year.
SCSU is back in action on Oct. 1 for a road game at AIC.
