Second Half Rally Sends Mansfield Over Field Hockey, 5-3

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Three different players scored a goal, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team lost its 2013 season opener to Mansfield University on Saturday afternoon, 5-3.

Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) opened the scoring less than two minutes into play off an assist from Anna Marcucilli (Cheshire, Conn.) to put the Owls ahead, 1-0. Mansfield tied the game 18:01 into the half on a goal from Taryn Schawillie, her first of four goals on the day.

The Owls went back in front with 17:09 remaining in the first half on a marker from Allison Vilardi (Burlington, Conn.). Schawillie tied the score with 7:56 remaining in the frame and then added another just over five minutes later to make it 3-2. That was the score at halftime.

Schawillie extended the lead to 4-2 on a tally with 8:35 remaining. Mansfield added another score just 78 seconds later to push the cushion to 5-2. Kayla Quinn (Sutton, Mass.) countered with her first of the year with 4:17 remaining, but the Owls would get no closer.

Southern Connecticut held a 24-17 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow for a game against Shippensburg.
