Women's Lacrosse Opens 2014 Season on Saturday Against East Stroudsburg

A NEW SEASON BEGINS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team opens the 2014 against East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The game will be played at the University of Bridgeport's Knights Field.

SPELLMAN TAKES THE REINS
After spending the 2013 season as an assistant coach, Maureen Spellman was named head coach of the Owls' women's lacrosse program in August, 2013. Last year, Spellman helped the squad match its single-season record for victories.

ALL-TIME AGAINST EAST STROUDSBURG
Saturday's game will mark the first-ever meeting in women's lacrosse between SCSU and East Stroudsburg.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
Southern Connecticut was selected 12th in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 10 newcomers to the club this year - sophomores Lauren Anderson, Eliza Doane and Jennifer McCarthy and freshmen Sarah Bazinet, Alyssa Gemmell, Sarah Horelik, Lindsey Luposello, Marley Robert, Gabrielle Robinson and Kennedy Sherman.

THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Emily Horan and Erica Martino, and graduate student Lynette Martinez will serve as team captains for the 2014 season.

LOOKING BACK AT 2013
The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team concluded the 2013 season with a final mark of 3-13.

TRIO EARN ACADEMIC HONOR
Three members of the squad - Amalia Calafiore, Becca Jennings and Erica Martino - were named as recipients of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year.

TEAM COLLECTS IWLCA ACADEMIC HONORS
The Owls were  selected as one of just 22 Division II programs to earn Academic Squad honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Teams must post a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher to earn this accolade.

MARTINO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE
Erica Martino was named to the Northeast-10 Conference 2013 Women's Lacrosse All-Academic Team.
• Martino started all 16 games for the Owls in 2013. She ranked second on the team in groundballs (32) and led the Owls with 18 caused turnovers. Martino also registered 17 draw controls and tallied one assist on the year.
• To be eligible for selection to the academic all-conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR).

DRAWING THE LINE
Sarah Muise finished the 2013 season ranked No. 19 in all of Division II in draw controls/game with 4.06 per contest.Muise totaled 65 draw controls during the campaign. Her draw control tally was also sixth best in the Northeast-10 Conference last year.

ON DECK
The Owls are back in action on March 5 for a game at Queens.
