Owls Go 2-0 On Day One in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla.. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team opened up its season today, as they won two out of two games on the premiere day of action in Florida. 

The Owls had a 5-3 defeat over the Eagles from Post University (2-5) and also had a 7-1 victory over the Clippers from Concordia. 

In game one, Southern scored five runs in five innnings of play, for the 5-3 win. 

Going into the third inning there was no score, until they had three on and Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) was able to work a walk and brought Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) in for the first run. The action didn't stop, as Koerner, Jaime Conklin (Falls Village, Conn.) and Jamie Mitchell (Seymour, Conn.) would then advance on a wild pitch, Mitchell advancing home to make the score 2-0. Captain Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) was up next with a ground out RBI to shortstop, bringing Conklin home to make the score 3-0. 

The Eagles were still scorless in the third inning. 

SCSU would go on to score two more runs off errors in the fifth inning as well as allowing two runs. Post couldn't make the come-back, losing to the Owls by a final score of 5-3. 

Sophomore Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) had the win in this one, going all seven innings. She had four strikeouts, no walks and allowed only two runs. 

A first inning blow-out was the key to the win in the second game against Concordia, scoring all seven runs in that first inning. 

The Owls scored their seven runs off of several key hits from Marden and Koerner. 

Pitcher Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) had seven strikeouts on the afternoon and Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) tallied three in relief. 

Concordia could not make a comeback, scoring their only run in the fifth inning, along with three errors. SCSU went on to win it by a score of 7-1. 

The Owls are back in action tomorrow, taking on Felician at 9 a.m. and Georgian Court at 11 a.m. down in Clermont, Fla.
