Women's Lacrosse Edged By AIC In Overtime, 16-14

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The American International College women's lacrosse team scored twice in a span of 22 seconds early in the second overtime to capture a 16-14 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday.

The Owls dropped to 3-10 and 0-9 in league play with the loss, while AIC improved to 5-9 and 2-8.

SCSU received a team-high four goals from Emily Orser (Hamden, Conn.) and three from Sarah Muise (Killingworth, Conn.), who also added a game-high nine draw controls. Kennedy Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists.

The Owls appeared on their way to victory for the second game in a row until AIC seized momentum in the final 15 minutes of regulation.

SCSU held an 8-6 lead at the break, but the Yellow Jackets scored the first three of the first four goals of the second half to tie the game at 9-9.

Southern Connecticut countered with three straight goals to take its biggest lead of the game, 12-9, with 16:13 left. Lauren Anderson (Cheshire, Conn.), Orser and Sherman scored during the run for the Owls.

From there, the Yellow Jackets scored three in a row to even the score again. Muise put the Owls back in front before back-to-back AIC goals gave the visitors a one-goal lead. Orser forced a 14-14 tie on her fourth goal of the day, that coming with 4:10 left in regulation.

Neither team scored the rest of the way in regulation. AIC appeared to take the lead in the final seconds of the first overtime, but a goal was disallowed due to an illegal stick.

Whitney McKay and Brittany Flynn then scored for AIC in the opening seconds of the second extra frame and the visitors hung on from there.

AIC jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before four straight SCSU goals – two from Orser and one each from Sherman and Anderson – put the hosts ahead  5-4. AIC scored the next two to retake the lead at 6-5. Muise tied the game at 6-6 before two McCarthy markers handed the Owls  an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Vanessa Pagano ( Wilton, Conn.) finished with eight saves for the Owls.

SCSU is back in action on Saturday for a home game against Merrimack.
