Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A bases clearing double from Guiliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) was the key hit in a six-run second inning as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team closed its 2014 season with a 9-0 (five inning) shutout of American International on Saturday.
The win was the eighth in a row for the Owls, who closed the year with a final record of 19-18.Prior to the game, SCSU honored its two seniors,
Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) and
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.).
Winning pitcher
Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) tossed five shutout innings and allowed just two hits.
The Owls quickly took control of the game with a big inning in the second. A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs, and
Jaime Conklin (Falls Village, Conn.) followed with a single down the left field line to score Marden.
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) then came through with a flare into left center that made it 2-0.
D'Arcangelo's three-run double to deep left made it 5-0. She came around to score after a throwing error by AIC that came on a single from
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.).
Southern scored three more runs in the fourth to put the game away. The first run came courtesy of an error on a fielders' choice by D'Arcangelo. Buch then singled to plate a second run, with D'Arcangelo coming all the way around on another throwing error.
Koerner had two hits, two runs scored and a RBI. Buch had two hits and a RBI while Conklin added a hit, a RBI and scored twice. D'Arcangelo scored twice in addition to a hit and three RBI.
