Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Led by a career day from junior
Bailey McGinnis (North Branford, Conn.) and a dominate display from the offense, the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team cruised to a 6-2 victory over Mansfield University Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
SCSU opened the scoring with 19:40 remaining in the first half on a goal from McGinnis. Shortly after, junior
Lauren Anderson (Cheshire, Conn.) was able to put the team up 2-0 after finding the lower left corner of the goal on a penalty stroke.
The Owls continued to dominate on offense as sophomore
Kristi Montemurro (New Milford, Conn.) tacked on an insurance goal at the 34:53 mark. However, Mansfield was able to put one pass SCSU goalkeeper
Audrey Dolloff to cut the lead to two (3-1) heading into halftime.
It didn't take McGinnis very long to add to the Owls lead in the second frame. In the 44th minute, McGinnis was able to connect for her second goal of the day off a Owls rebounded shot. Three minutes later, Mansfield's Chelsea Tanco answered back with the Mountaineers second goal of the afternoon.
With the Owls up 4-2, McGinnis struck again for the home team with her third and final goal. Not even five minutes later, freshman
Whitney Dyer (Danbury, Conn.) rounded out the afternoon by deflecting in a strong drive from freshman
Emma Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.), making it a four-goal lead that would stand the rest of the way.
Dolloff turned away six shots, while senior
Erica Martino (Monroe, Conn.) added a defensive save to the Owls stats.
The Owls are back in tomorrow (Sept. 6th), when the team host Shippensburg in Day Two of the Dora Metrilis Classic. First whistle is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Jess Dow Field.
