Colleen Murphy (Branford, Conn.) registered her second hat trick of the season as the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team captured a 5-1 victory over Mercy in non-league action today.
The Owls are now 5-10 on the year, while Mercy moved to 6-8.
Zoe Fanolis (Hamden, Conn.) and
Vienna Pallisco (Sherman, Conn.) each registered a goal and an assist as well in the contest.
Murphy opened the scoring just 6:52 into play, as she took a pass from
Alicia Jackson (Burlington, Conn.) and tucked a shot inside the right post.
Fanolis extended the lead to two goals off a penalty corner with 6:17 left in the opening half. She received a feed from Pallisco at the top of the circle and blasted home a low shot.
Murphy gave the Owls a three-goal cushion heading into the intermission, scoring off a pass from Fanolis with only 27 seconds left in the first half.
Southern's lead expanded to 4-0 just over 11 minutes into the second half when Murphy redirected a pass from
Bailey McGinnis (North Branford, Conn.) through the legs of the Mercy goalie.
Pallisco closed the scoring for the Owls 3:03 after Murphy's final goal. The Owls worked the ball around the circle on a penalty corner. Pallisco eventually tapped in a bid from
Emily Stross (Avon, Conn.) for the goal.
Lauren Anderson (Cheshire, Conn.) also assisted on the tally.
Mercy's Jackie Ballin added a goal to make it a 5-1 final.
Goalie
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) stopped four shots in the first 51:54 of action to earn the win.
Kelli McCombs (Bristow, Va.) saved all three shots she saw the rest of the way.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday when they host Saint Anselm on Senior Day.
