Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team earned its second win of the season as the Owls defeated Chestnut Hill in game one of the day by a score of 12-8. Following the win, the Owls improve to 2-0 on the seaon while the Griffins fall to 1-2. Freshman
Shawn Urbano (Stamford, Conn.) picked up the win for the Owls after coming in the bottom of the sixth to relieve
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.). Urbano pitched 3.2 innings and allowed no runs on two hits white walking two and striking out five batters. Picini was on the mound for the first five innings for the Owls and allowed eight runs on seven hits. He also walked four and struck out six batters.
Freshman
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with a 3-of-5 showing at the plate while chipping in with two runs and a team-high four RBI's. Along with Criscuolo, three other Owls, including
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.),
McNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and
Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.), eached tallied two of the Owls' 12 runs. As a team, Southern Connecticut went 13-of-40 at the plate and registered 10 RBIs against the Griffins' pitching staff.
Dylan Borawski of Chestnut Hill picked up his first loss of the year as he allowed five runs off six hits and recorded three earned runs. Borawski came in to relieve Andrew Sibson who pitched the first five innings and allowed seven earned runs, four walks, seven hits and two strike outs.
Southern Connecticut opened the scoring in the second inning as Zullo crossed home plate after scoring on a ground out to third by
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.). However, the Griffins answered right back to the Owls' one run with an 8-1 lead after the bottom of the third.
The game had a big momentum shift in the top of the third as the Owls tacked on three more runs, thanks to a triple from
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and a single from
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) to allow Finnegan, Wichmann and Criscuolo to score, to cut the lead in half, 8-4. Southern Connecticut's pitching staff held Chestnut Hill's offense to eight for the remainder of the game while the Owls score three in fifth, one in the sixth and four in the ninth to take the 12-8 win over Chestnut Hill.
