NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Catherine Ursillo (Bergenfield, N.J) and Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) went a combined 8-for-15 with a double, a triple and a home run for Southern Connecticut State University, but the Owls dropped a doubleheader against St. Rose, 6-3 and 9-7, on Saturday afternoon as conference play began.

The Owls are now 5-12 and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights are now 6-13 and 2-3.

Franco went 3-for-5 in game two with a double and two runs scored. Southern Connecticut was down 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh when she began the Owls' late one-out rally with a double to right field. She advanced to third on a Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) single and came around to score on a Danielle Piazza (Hopewell Jct, N.Y.) double. D'Arcangelo scored when the next batter, Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, N.Y.), singled to make it 9-4. Piazza and Yaffa followed D'Arcangelo across home plate after the next three batters while St. Rose picked up an out on the basepaths. They got the last out on a pop fly to first base. The Owls picked up five runs on six hits and one error in the bottom of the seventh.

In game one, Southern Connecticut was down 3-0 in the bottom of the third when it picked up two runs. Ursillo led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) single. A walk by Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) and a single by Franco loaded the bases, and Medeiros came around to score on a walk by Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.).

After the Golden Knights picked up a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2, Ursillo hit her first home run of the year, a shot to left-center field, to get SCSU back to within one. St. Rose picked up two insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Southern Connecticut returns to action on Monday when it hosts a doubleheader against Dowling starting at 2:30 p.m.
