Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped a pair of games to AIC on Sunday afternoon, 4-3 in game one and 8-6 in game two.
The Owls are now 8-21 overall and 1-10 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets are now 14-12 and 4-5.
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) hit her eighth home run of the year in the first inning of game one. The shot to left field on the first pitch she saw scored
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) and got SCSU out to an early 2-0 lead.
AIC came back to take a one run lead in the fifth inning with a two RBI single and an RBI double. Then, in the bottom of the sixth,
Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) smacked her first home run of the year, a solo shot to left field, to tie the game at three. AIC broke the tie in the top of the seventh with an RBI single, and the Owls were unable to respond.
In game two, the Owls again started the scoring with a
Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.) single to center field, plating
Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.). AIC's Jamie Mainez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at one, but SCSU would pick up the next four runs. In the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets' Sarah Beliveau walked home two batters with the bases loaded, giving Southern Connecticut a 3-1 lead. Then in the fifth, Ceballos brought home two more Owls on a single to center field. She went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in game two. Southern Connecticut picked up six hits and five runs in the five innings Beliveau pitched.
AIC put together a big sixth inning with five runs to take a 6-5 lead. Then in the bottom half of the sixth,
Samantha Peltier (Sutton, Mass.) reached base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Franco brought her in with an RBI single to tie the game back up at six. The Yellow Jackets picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead that would lead to the win.
Southern Connecticut's next game is Monday at Stonehill starting at 3 p.m.
