SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched another gem for Southern Connecticut State University as the Owls split a doubleheader against Le Moyne, winning game one 2-0 and dropping game two 8-1. Cockrill struck out nine batters and allowed four hits and three walks over seven innings.
Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished game one 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
The Owls are now 10-26 overall and 3-15 in the Northeast-10, while Le Moyne is 22-13 and 10-7.
Both pitchers held the offenses scoreless until the seventh inning of game one, but the Dolphins threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Cockrill got Madison LaRita to pop out to short to end the inning.
In the next half inning, the Owls picked up the deciding runs. The bases were loaded for
Arianne Tedeschi (Deer Park, N.Y.), who hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Heather Jackson (Saunderstown, R.I.) from third. Medeiros added to the total with a single to right field that plated
Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, N.Y.).
In the bottom of the seventh, Cockrill walked the first batter she saw but struck out Emily Bagley and got Allison Reynolds to ground into a double play to end the game.
Southern Connecticut did not fair as well in game two. Le Moyne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended their lead to five by the sixth. The Owls grabbed a run in the top of the sixth when Medeiros scored from second on a
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) single to center field, but Le Moyne scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach.
Southern Connecticut and Le Moyne play the final game of their three game set on Sunday at 12 p.m.
