NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With the scored tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team rallied together a five-run inning en route to an 8-6 win over Southwest Division foe Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at The Ballpark at SCSU. Following today's win, the Owls improve to 10-20-1 and 3-7 while the Panthers fall to 17-18 and 5-5 on the year.
Senior
Jason Harper (Saugus, Mass.) picked up the crucial "W" and improves his record to 4-2 on the mound. Harper allowed two runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out two and walking two batters over seven innings of pitching. Freshman
Shawn Urbano (Stamford, Conn.) picked up his first save of the year, relieving
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.) in the top of the eight with one out and bases loaded. Urbano recorded a hit, a walk and three strikeouts.
At the plate, junior
McNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.),
Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.),
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) collected two hits apiece in the win. Senior
Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.) collected a team-high three RBI while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Southern Connecticut struck first in the bottom of the second as DeRosa hit a double to right field, allowing Finnegan and DeMartino to score putting the Owls up 2-0. However, in the top of the third, Adelphi would battle back on offense rallying together two runs on three hits, tying the game at 2-2.
Following a scoreless fourth, Southern Connecticut would strike again this time scoring five runs on five hits to take a 7-2 lead over the Panthers. With one out, Joyce began the Owls' rally with a walk before Lieberman singled to left field, putting runners on first and second. Paul then connected on a pitch that sent the ball to left field and allowed Joyce to score. Still with one out, DeMartino, Finnegan and Hart all singled and allowed runners to score on all hits, before DeRosa's sacrifice fly allowed the final runner of the inning to score.
Harper kept the Panthers at bay in the top of the sixth before the Owls extended their lead to six, 8-2, after Joyce scored off an error by the left fielder in the bottom of the frame.
Adelphi managed to threaten the Owls one last time in the top of the eighth as the Panthers brought the score to within two, 8-6, after scoring four runs on four hits, but the Owls managed to end the threat before the visitors could have done more damage.
Southern Connecticut finished the afternoon going 13-for-37 at the plate as well as recorded eight runs, and seven RBI. Adelphi went 9-for-34 at the plate and collected five RBI against the Owls.
The Owls return to action on April 22 at No. 8 Southern New Hampshire. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
