Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched a one-hitter and
Danielle Piazza (Hopewell Jct, N.Y.) hit her third home run of the year for Southern Connecticut State University in a 4-0 win over Pace on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Owls improve to 11-27 overall and 4-16 in the conference, while the Setters fall to 21-12 and 14-5.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Southern Connecticut manufactured all four of its runs. With two outs and runners on the corners,
Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) reached on an error by the Pace shortstop, scoring
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) from third. Piazza, the next batter, cracked a home run to left field to extend the lead.
Cockrill forced three groundouts to end the bottom of the sixth, then allowed one walk in the bottom of the seventh before getting the last two Setters on groundouts, as well. She finished with seven strikeouts and five walks, and gave up just one fly out.
Southern Connecticut wraps up its season on Sunday when it hosts Franklin Pierce on Senior Day at 12 p.m.
