NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Nicole Healey (Milford, Conn.) capped a hat trick with the game-winning goal 1:07 into overtime to give the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team a dramatic 7-6 victory over American International this evening.
 
 

The Owls are now 4-12 overall and 2-10 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while AIC dropped to 8-8 and 5-7.
 
Healey also had an assist for a game-high four points. Carolynn Keal (Southington, Conn.) scored twice, while Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) and Taylor Portelinha (Woodbridge, Conn.) also netted a goal.
 


AIC jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes in before the Owls' rallied. Healey scored her first of the game only 13 seconds after the third Yellow Jackets goal. Keal and Cozzolino would score later in the half to even the game at 3-3 going into halftime.
 
Meanwhile, the Owls' defense was assembling an outstanding stretch of play on the other end of the field. AIC scored only once over a stretch of 43 minutes of action. That one tally came 12 seconds into the second half and briefly gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead.
 
However, Healey, Keal and Portelinha countered with three straight goals to give the Owls a 6-4 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
 
AIC goals from Cheyenne Carden and Jessica Lawler tied the game at 6-6 late in regulation to force overtime.
 
The Yellow Jackets won the opening draw control of the extra frame, but Southern's defense forced a turnover. After a SCSU timeout, Healey sprinted to open space to the right of the goal and fired home a shot that sent the Owls into a frenzy.
 
Goalie Chelsea Callahan (Hamden, Conn.) stopped five shots to earn the win.
 
The Owls are back in action on Saturday for the regular season finale at Southern New Hampshire.
