NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team fell to New Haven on Wednesday afternoon, 7-5 in 12 innings. Two games were originally scheduled for the day, but game two was canceled due to game one running long.
The Owls are now 6-18 overall and 0-7 in the NE-10, while New Haven improves to 15-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
New Haven picked up the first four runs of the game in innings three, four and five. Southern got them all back in the sixth. Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.) led off the inning with a double, her second of the year. Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) and Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) followed with a walk and a single to load the bases. Then, Arianne Tedeschi (Deer Park, N.Y.) singled to left-center field, scoring Ceballos and moving the runners up. Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) was next with a fielder's choice that scored Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, Conn.), who pinch-ran for Groskritz. With runners on first and second, Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) grounded out to first base, advancing the runners. Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) then smacked a single to left field to score both Medeiros and Tedeschi and tie the game at four. D'Arcangelo leads the team with 17 RBI.The Chargers picked another run in the 10th, but again the Owls were there to respond. With one out, Catherine Ursillo (Bergenfield, N.J.) scored from third base when Jodi DiSanto (Bristol, Conn.) hit a rocket to first that swallowed up the first baseman. Ursillo's run tied the game at five.Southern Connecticut had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the 11th. The bases were loaded with one out after D'Arcangelo and Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) both walked, but Holly Noe (Groton, Conn.) struck out and Ceballos hit a fielder's choice to end the inning. The Chargers picked up two runs in the top of the 12th and the Owls were unable to answer in the bottom half.Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched all 12 innings for Southern Connecticut. She allowed three earned runs and struck out 11 batters, tied for the most in any outing this season. Cockrill is now fourth in the conference in strikeouts with 68.Southern Connecticut's next games are Friday when it hosts Adelphi at 2 and 4 p.m.
