SCSU Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At Molloy, 16-12

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse put up a fight in its season-opener at Molloy, but dropped a 16-12 decision on the road to open the 2024 year. Southern saw five different student-athletes score multiple goals.

Allie Palmer led the Owls with four points on the afternoon, scoring twice and assisting on two more goals. Kristen McIntire had two goals and an assists, while Savannah Feinberg, Allie Welder and Bailey McDermott all scored twice for the Owls. Morgan Reilly had two assists in the game. In addition to her two goals, McDermott also matched Hannah Holmes with a team-best two caused turnovers while Holmes led the Owls with four ground balls.

Southern was unable to break through in the first 15 minutes of the game while Molloy built a six-goal lead heading into the second quarter. Feinberg and Welder, on an assist from Reilly, cut the Lions' lead to four goals, 6-2, with 10 minutes to go in the half. Mollloy rattled off three-more goals to push its lead to 9-2 before Southern scored four unanswered goals in a three-minute stretch. Palmer scored her first of the game, before McDermott scored with a man-advantage. Alexandra Ruel and McIntire found the back of the net to make it 9-6. McIntire scored again before the end of the half to answer back-to-back goals from Molloy, who held an 11-7 lead at the break.

Coming out of the half, Palmer scored on a pass from Reilly before Feinberg scored her second of the day to pull the Owls within two goals, 11-9. Molloy countered with two goals before Anna Meserve scored at the end of the third to make it 13-11 heading into the final frame.

Welder and McDermott scored in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as the Owls pulled within a goal of Molloy, 13-12, but the home team Lions scored three-straight goals over the final 9:22 to seal the win.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 27 when its hosts Saint Michael's for its Northeast-10 Conference opener at home at Jess Dow Field at 4 p.m.
