SCSU Women's Lacrosse Downs Saint Michael's, 15-7

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Saint Michael's, 15-7, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. With the win in their home- and conference-opener, the Owls stand at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Kirsten McIntire scored a game-high four goals, with an assist, for five points in the game while Alexandra Ruel had a goal and three assists. Morgan Reilly and Savannah Feinberg had a gol and two assists each while Amelia Mansfield and Allie Welder had two goals apiece.

Defensively, Maggie Kallinich had four caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead the Owls while Hannah Holmes totaled three ground balls in the win. Sarah Robbins and Bailey McDermott also had three caused turnovers each while Owls goalkeeper Caelan Connors had 11 saves in her first win of the season.



Southern opened with four unanswered goals as McIntire, Mansfield, Allie Palmer and Welder all found the back of the cage. Ruel set up McIntire with the man-up goal before McIntire fed Mansfield to give Owls a 2-0 lead. St. Michael's managed to outscore the Owls, 2-1, over the last seven minutes of the first quarter with Ruel scoring on a feed from Feinberg.

McIntire scored the second time in the game to open the second quarter, while Morgan Reilly also scored. With the Owls holding a 7-4 lead with 10:47 to play in the half, the Owls rattled off four unanswered goals, including Mansfield's second and McIntire's third while Feinberg and Jordan Fisher also scored, to give Southern an 11-4 lead at the break.

Coming out of the half, Anna Meserve scored her second goal of the season before McIntire scored her fourth goal of the contest to give the Owls a 13-4 lead. The Purple Knights responded with two goals to cut Southern's lead to 13-6, but Bailey McDermott and Welder scored as well to seal the 15-7 win. Southern is back in action when they travel to Rindge, N.H. on Saturday, Mar. for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m.
