SCSU Women's Lacrosse Falls To Franklin Pierce, 9-8

RINDGE, N.H. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost to Franklin Pierce, 9-8, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Rindge, N.H. With the loss, Southern dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the NE10 while Franklin Pierce improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Six different Owls scored led by Morgan Reilly's hat trick while she also added two assists. Alexandra Ruel, Jordan Fisher, Anna Meserve, Bailey McDermott and Kirsten McIntyre all scored for the Owls while McIntyre and Savannah Feinberg added assists. Hannah Holmes had two caused turnovers and two ground balls while Michela Rutigliano had three ground balls to lead the Owls. Caelen Connors made 11 saves in goal.



For the year, Reilly and McIntire have totaled 10 points each while McIntire leads the Owls with seven goals and Reilly leads Southern with six assists. Feinberg and Ruel sit at three goals and three assists each to date.

A close game from the start, Southern and Franklin Pierce traded goals through the first period. After Reilly opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Franklin Pierce tied it up at 6:47 to play. Jordan Fisher gave the Owls a 2-1 lead before FPU scored twice in the last three minutes of the period to give the Ravens a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter. Both defenses were on display as Franklin Pierce held its one-goal lead until the 4:43 mark when Meserve tied the game. Less than a minute later, Feinberg fed Reilly to give Southern a 4-3 lead before Franklin Pierce tied it to send the game to halftime tied at 4-4.

Coming out of the half, Franklin Pierce scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead with 10:19 to play in the quarter. Reilly scored her third goal of the game before feeding McDermott to tie the game at 6-6. McIntire then converted to give Southern a 7-6 lead. Franklin Pierce tied the game with a advantage, 7-7. Pierce made it three-straight goals when they scored twice in the fourth to take a 9-7 lead.

Given a free position shot, McIntire fed Ruel behind the goal, who stepped out to the left of the goalie and blasted a shot that found the back of the net to pull the Owls within a goal, 9-8. With 1:22 to play, the Owls appeared to have a breakaway, but the ball was whistled dead and awarded to Franklin Pierce. Seconds later, a Southern player was carded for slashing and Frankin Pierce ran the time out to seal the win.

Southern Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 6 when it hosts Bridgeport at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
