SCSU Women's Lacrosse Defeats American International, 21-6

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated American International, 21-6 in an NE10 matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The Owls improved to an overall record of 8-5 and an NE10 record of 3-4 while the Yellowjackets dropped to an overall record of 1-7 and an NE10 record of 0-7. 10 different players scored for Southern Connecticut State.

Alexandra Ruel recorded a team-best of four goals and had five points. Three players had three goals: Kirsten McIntire had four points as well, as Allie Palmer and Abigail Nolan had three points. Morgan Reilly and Anna Meserve both scored two goals, as Reilly had three points and Meserve had four. Four Owls had a goal and a point against American International: Amelia Mansfield, Maddox Burton, Jordan Fisher and Bailey McDermott

Anna Meserve led the team with two assists, Alexandra Ruel had a team-best of two ground balls, and Hannah Holmes had a team-best of two caused turnovers. Bailey McDermott and Amelia Mansfield dominated the draw control as they both recorded eight. As a team, Southern won 21 draws to the Yellowjackets' nine. 

In the first quarter, Alexandra Ruel got the scoring started for the Owls with a unassisted goal. Then, just seconds later, Amelia Mansfield found the back of the net. American International scored their first goal of the day but Bailey McDermott responded with a goal, with an assist by Anna Meserve. Minutes later, Abigail Nolan scored her first of the day to put Southern up, 4-1. Before the end of the quarter, the Yellowjackets scored their second goal. 

In the second quarter, Allie Palmer scored her first goal, unassisted as American International answered back with a goal of their own. With 10 minutes later, Kirsten McIntire would score back-to-back goals. The Yellowjackets didn't go away as they went on to score two goals but Ruel responded with her second goal of the game before the end of the quarter. Southern Connecticut was up 8-5 over American International at the half. 

In the third quarter, Morgan Reilly scored her first goal of the day with an assist by Alexandra Ruel, to open the second half of play. Seconds later, Anna Meserve scored again, with an assist from McIntire. After that, Morgan Reilly blasted a shot into the back of the net with an assist from Meserve. With nine minutes left, Allie Palmer recorded her second goal of the day, as this extended the Owls' lead to seven.

American International scored a goal with less than eight minutes left in the third; however, the Owls would score two more goals, coming from Ruel and Nolan. Going into the fourth, the Owls were winning 15-6. 

In the fourth quarter, Southern Connecticut came out of the huddle with determination as they scored within the first minute of play, with a goal by Jordan Fisher. After that, Palmer scored with an assist by Reilly, then, McIntire scored her third and final goal of the day. With six minutes left, Maddox Burton scored her first of the game then a minute later, Ruel recorded her fourth goal of the day. With the clock ticking down, Abigail Nolan had a goal before time ran out. The Owls had six unanswered goals in the fourth, to get the 21-6 victory over American International.

The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. against Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y. in a NE10 matchup.
