SCSU Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Saint Anselm, 8-7 in Overtime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost a overtime heartbreaker to Saint Anselm, 8-7 on Thursday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 4-1 and an NE10 record of 1-1 while the Hawks improved to an overall record of 5-0 and an NE10 record of 2-0. 

Anna Meserve led the Owls with a team-best of two goals, had a team-best of four ground balls and a team-best of two caused-turnovers. Five Owls scored a goal: Amelia Mansfield, Macy Vail, Maddox Burton, Allie Welder and Allie Palmer. Vail had a team-best of three points and two assists, while Burton totaled two points and an assist. In goal, Caelan Connors recorded 15 saves for the Owls. 

 


Gabriella Smith, Abigail Nolan and Vail each had two ground ball pick ups. Amelia Mansfield led Southern in draws with three while Anna Meserve, Bailey McDermott and Abigail Nolan each had two draw controls. 

In the first quarter, Saint Anselm got on the board within the first four minutes of play; however, Southern answered back with two goals back-to-back by Anna Meserve and Macy Vail. With a minute left, Anna Meserve scored her second goal of the day to put the Owls up, 3-1. Nonetheless, the Hawks scored a goal with three seconds left, to cut the Owls' lead to 3-2. 

In the second quarter, Saint Anselm started off with a goal, two minutes in, to tie the game up, 3-3. A minute later, they retook the lead for the first time since the opening minutes. Amelia Mansfield recorded her first goal of the game, to tie the score again. Then, Allie Welder got on the scoresheet, to score the Owls' fifth goal of the day, to retake the lead, 5-4. The Hawks didn't stay down as they scored three unanswered goals, within two minutes, to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. 

In the third quarter, both teams came out of halftime with momentum, as both defenses were tested heavily. No goals were scored until five minutes left in the third, as Maddox Burton threw a shot into the back of the net, with an assist from Macy Vail, to get within one goal of the Hawks' lead. In the fourth quarter, Allie Palmer evened things up for the Owls, 7-7, with 13 minutes left, with an assist by Burton. 

Saint Anselm and Southern Connecticut went end to end, with shots on goal, but it was the goalkeepers and the defenses who kept the score even at 7-7 for the rest of regulation. In overtime, the Hawks won the draw and went down the field to score their eighth goal of the game, to clinch the overtime heartbreaker victory over the Owls.

The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida. Then, they will play Warner University in Lake Wales Florida on Wednesday, March 19 at 5:00 p.m. Southern will return back to Jess Dow Field on Thursday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m. against non-conference opponent, Caldwell University.
