SCSU Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Warner 24-0, Most Goals Scored in Program History

Box Score LAKE WALES, Fla. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated non-conference opponent, Warner University, 24-0 on Wednesday night. The Owls scored 24 goals, which is the most goals scored in program history, recorded their second shutout in program history and it is the largest margin of victory in program history. The Owls improved to an overall record of 5-2 while the Royals dropped to an overall record of 4-7. 14 different players scored goals for Southern Connecticut in the historic victory.
 

Allie Palmer had a team-best of four goals and five points. Taryn Ugrin scored three goals, while Cailean Roy, Maddox Burton, Sofia Zumbrunn, Jordan Fisher and Anna Meserve all had two goals. Seven Owls each had a goal: Amelia Mansfield, Macy Vail, Hannah Hathway, Allie Welder, Gabriella Smith, Bailey McDermott and Abigail Nolan. Goalkeepers Kiley Nolan and Caelan Connors shared the shutout with the Owls' defense.

Vail and Burton both led the team with three assists, as Nicolette Spotlow had two assists. Nine Owls added an assist in the victory: Palmer, Ugrin, Meserve, Mansfield, McDermott, Welder, Smith, Sibley and Hathway. Rebecca Sibley, Allie Welder, Jordan Fisher, Gabriella Smith and Bailey McDermott all had a team-best of two ground balls. McKenzie Schindler, Smith and Sibley all led the Owls with a caused turnover. Amelia Mansfield won a team-best of five draws, while Bailey McDermott won three draws, four Owls each won two draw controls: Roy, Welder, Nolan and Meserve, as Zumbrunn won one draw control. 
 
In the first quarter, Southern started off the scoring with two goals in the first two minutes of play, with goals by Macy Vail and Allie Palmer, and assists by Maddox Burton. Cailean Roy scored her first of the game, with an assist by Anna Meserve, to put the Owls up, 3-0. Jordan Fisher recorded her first goal of the day as minutes later, Allie Palmer had her second goal of the game, with an assist by Vail. With two minutes left, Taryn Ugrin added her first goal while Hannah Hathway and Sofia Zumbrunn scored their first goals of the game, extending the lead to 8-0.
 
In the second quarter, the Owls continued to be dominant as they opened with two goals in the first minute. Palmer scored her third of the game, with an assist from Vail. Allie Welder recorded the Owls' 10th goal, with an assist by Burton. Then, a minute later, Southern scored two back-to-back goals by Burton and Bailey McDermott. Anna Meserve scored her first of the day, to put the Owls up 13-0. Then, Cailean Roy threw a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the day.  Burton, with an assist from Vail, scored her second goal of the game, to finish out the half with a 15-0 lead.
 
In the third quarter, Abigail Nolan recorded her first goal of the day for the Owls. Then, Taryn Ugrin totaled her second goal, with an assist by Hathway, bringing the score to 17-0, in favor of Southern. Sofia Zumbrunn scored her first of the game as Mansfield recorded her first goal against the Royals. Palmer added her fourth goal and the 20th overall goal for the Owls.
 
In the fourth quarter, Gabriella Smith fired a shot into the goal to put Southern up, 21-0, with an assist by Ugrin. Minutes later, Fisher added her second goal of the game, with an assist by Nicolette Spotlow. Meserve recorded her second goal of the day, with an assist by Palmer. Ugrin scored the Owls' 24th and final goal of the game, as Southern Connecticut clinched the 24-0 victory over Warner.
 
The Owls will travel across town to West Haven, Connecticut on Wednesday, March 26 to face NE10 and Elm-City rival, University of New Haven at 4:00 p.m. Southern Connecticut will return home to Jess Dow Field to start their four-game homestand, on Thursday, March 27 in a non-conference matchup against Caldwell University at 4:00 p.m.
