WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse fell to NE10 and Elm-City rival, University of New Haven, 19-9 on Wednesday night. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 5-3 and an NE10 record of 1-2 while the Chargers improved to an overall record of 6-3 and an NE10 record of 3-0.
Macy Vail scored a team-best of four goals, on four shots on goal and totaled four points.
Allie Palmer recorded two goals and added two points, while
Anna Meserve,
Amelia Mansfield and
Allie Welder each scored a goal for the Owls.
Maddox Burton led the team with a career-best of four assists and four points. In goal,
Caelan Connors made 11 saves against the Chargers.
Welder picked up a team-best of three ground balls and Meserve totaled two ground balls. Meserve led the Owls with four draws, as Mansfield, Welder and
Abigail Nolan all won two draw controls. For caused turnovers, Meserve caused three while
Gabriella Smith caused two turnovers.
In the first quarter, the Chargers got on the board first; however,
Allie Palmer answered back with her first goal of the game. The tone was set early on, that it would be a back-and-forth scoring battle between the Elm-City rivals. New Haven scored their second goal of the game, but
Macy Vail recorded two back-to-back goals, with the second goal assisted by
Maddox Burton, in less than a minute, to put the Owls up, 3-2. With a minute left, the Chargers evened the game at 3-3.
In the second quarter, New Haven regained the lead, bringing the score to 4-3. Vail recorded her third goal of the day, with another assist from
Maddox Burton, to tie the game at 4-4. The Chargers responded with five unanswered goals, to take over the lead and head into halftime with a 9-4 lead over Southern Connecticut.
In the third quarter, New Haven scored another five goals to start the second half, bringing the lead to 14-4 halfway through. Nonetheless, the Owls looked to make a comeback, starting with
Amelia Mansfield recording her first goal, with an assist by Burton.
Less than 20 seconds later, Palmer scored her second goal of the day.
Allie Welder scored her first goal of the game, then a minute later,
Anna Meserve spun around a defender and recorded her first goal of the day, cutting the Chargers' lead to six goals. Southern looked to have momentum on their side but New Haven would score two more goals to end the quarter with a 16-8 advantage.
In the fourth quarter,
Macy Vail would score her fourth goal of the game, with another assist by Burton, to bring the score to 16-9. However, the Chargers recorded three unanswered goals to finish out the game with a 19-9 victory over the Owls.
Southern will return to action on Thursday, March 27 in a non-conference matchup against Caldwell University at 4:00 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
