LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Georgian Court, 19-7, on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 3-0 while the Lions dropped to an overall record of 1-5.
Macy Vail scored a career-high of five goals, while
Allie Welder,
Jordan Fisher and
Anna Meserve each had three goals in the third straight victory of the season.
Rebecca Sibley had a career-best of two goals, as
Amelia Mansfield,
Bailey McDermott and
Allie Palmer all scored a goal against the Lions.
Maddox Burton, Palmer and Vail each had a team-best of two assists while
Anna Meserve,
Hannah Hathway and
Taryn Ugrin had an assist.
Macy Vail led the Owls with seven points, Meserve had four points, Palmer, Welder and Fisher all had three points.
Meserve had a team-best of four ground balls, as Welder, Sibley, McDermott,
Gabriella Smith and
Breya Montague each had three ground balls. Vail, Fisher and
Caelan Connors each picked up two ground balls.
Meserve also led the Owls in caused turnovers with three as Sibley, Vail, and Mansfield each had two.
Allie Welder had a team-best of five draw controls, while
Cailean Roy won three draws, while Meserve, Mansfield and McDermott won two draws against Georgian Court. In goal,
Caelan Connors recorded 13 saves for the Owls.
In the first quarter,
Jordan Fisher started the scoring off for the Owls in the fourth minute of play. Then,
Macy Vail scored, with an assist by
Maddox Burton, to put Southern up by two goals. Seconds later,
Allie Palmer ripped a shot past the goalie and scored her first goal of the game. The Owls went up 4-0 with three minutes left, with a goal by
Allie Welder. Fisher recorded her second goal of the day from the free position with a minute left in the quarter.
In the second quarter,
Macy Vail won the draw and went right down the field to score her second goal of the game, with another assist from
Maddox Burton. Minutes later,
Allie Welder recorded her second goal, with an assist by
Anna Meserve.
Halfway through the quarter, the Lions scored their first two goals of the game. However, the Owls responded with their eighth goal of the game, scored by
Anna Meserve, who was assisted by
Allie Palmer. Georgian Court would go on to score one more goal in the quarter; nonetheless,
Anna Meserve and
Allie Welder scored their second and third goals, to extend the Owls' lead, 10-3, heading into halftime.
Caelan Connors made six saves in goal for Southern in the first half.
In the third quarter, the Owls came out of halftime, ready to go, as within the first minute,
Jordan Fisher threw a shot into the back of the net, with an assist from Palmer.
Rebecca Sibley scored her first goal of the game, second of the season, with an assist by Vail to put the Owls up 12-3. The Lions answered with their first two goals of the quarter. Then,
Anna Meserve scored her third goal of the day. A minute later,
Macy Vail would also go on to score her third goal of the game.
Amelia Mansfield added a goal to the Owls' total as Southern finished the quarter with a lead of 15-7.
In the fourth quarter, with an assist from
Taryn Ugrin, Vail recorded her fourth goal of the day. Shortly after,
Bailey McDermott scored her first goal of the game, with an assist from Vail. A minute later, Vail would record her fifth and final goal of the day, with an assist from
Hannah Hathway. With a minute left,
Rebecca Sibley scored her second goal of the game as the Owls finished out the game with a 19-7 victory. Southern shut out the Lions, with no goals allowed, in the first and fourth quarters.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m. in Colchester, Vermont to face Saint Michael's College in their Northeast-10 Conference Opener. Southern will return home to Jess Dow Field on Thursday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m. against Saint Anselm College in their Northeast-10 Conference Home Opener.
