SCSU Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Saint Michael’s, 13-12 for Fourth Straight Victory

Box Score COLCHESTER, VT. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Saint Michael's, 13-12 in a Northeast-10 Conference battle. The Owls improved to an overall record of 4-0, and an NE10 record of 1-0. The Purple Knights dropped to an overall record of 2-4, and an NE10 record of 0-1. This is the fourth-straight victory of the season and the best start in program history for the Owls.

Allie Palmer led the Owls with four goals and four points. Macy Vail and Bailey McDermott scored three goals each, as Jordan Fisher had two goals and Cailean Roy added a goal. In goal, Caelan Connors recorded her fourth-straight win, as she totaled seven saves against the Purple Knights. 

Maddox Burton had a team-best of three assists, Fisher had two assists while Anna Meserve and Vail recorded an assist. Jordan Fisher and Macy Vail totaled four points for Southern. Auserehl Mazzuli, Gabriella Smith and Anna Meserve all recorded a team-best of two caused turnovers.

Caelan Connors had a team-best of three ground balls. Six Owls picked up two ground balls: Sammy Sleve, Macy Vail, Maddox Burton, Gabriella Smith, Anna Meserve and Auserehl Mazzuli. Allie Welder led the team with five draw controls and Anna Meserve won three draws.

In the first quarter, the Purple Knights would get on the board first. Then, minutes later, Allie Palmer scored her first goal of the game. After that, Saint Michael's would score their second goal of the day. From this point on, both teams knew it would be a tough battle for the lead for the rest of the game.

Bailey McDermott threw a shot in the back of the net, with an assist by Jordan Fisher. Seconds later, Fisher would score from the free position to put the Owls up, 3-2. Macy Vail recorded her first goal of the game, a minute later, to extend the Owls' lead to two goals. However, Saint Michael's went on to score four goals to finish the quarter up, 6-4.
 
In the second quarter, the Purple Knights started off with a goal, extending their lead to seven goals to Southern's four goals. Palmer scored another goal, to start the comeback for the Owls. Minutes later, with an assist from Maddox Burton, Vail had her second goal of the day. Allie Palmer would go on to record her third goal of the game, with a second assist by Burton, to tie up the score at 7-7. The remaining four minutes of the half were dominated by good defensive plays by both teams, including a save by Caelan Connors.
 
In the third quarter, Jordan Fisher put the Owls in the lead with a goal and an assist by Macy Vail. Nonetheless, the Purple Knights responded with two back-to-back goals to retake the lead, 9-8. Minutes later, Saint Michael's scored their 10th goal of the game, but the Owls answered back with another goal by Vail and an assist by Burton. With 38 seconds left, Cailean Roy put a goal in the back of the net, from the free position, to even the score, 10-10, going into the final 15 minutes of play.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Owls came out of the huddle with momentum as McDermott scored her second goal of the game, with an assist from Fisher, to take the lead. Saint Michael's tied the score again, 11-11 and then minutes later, they gained control of the lead, 12-11, with six minutes left. It was McDermott again, who scored her third goal of the game, with an assist by Anna Meserve to tie the score at 12-12.
 
Southern was working hard to put one more goal in the back of the net as time was ticking down. The Saint Michael's goalkeeper, Laura Dickerson, made some huge saves with less than a minute left to play. However, the Owls returned to the free position with Allie Palmer in front of the goal. With five seconds left, Palmer scored her fourth and final goal of the day, as Southern finished the game with a 13-12 victory.
 
The Owls will return to action on Thursday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m. at Jess Dow Field against Saint Anselm in their Northeast-10 Conference Home Opener.
