WORCESTER, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut lacrosse team lost a close game to Assumption, 14 to 12. The Owls drop to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10 while the Greyhounds improve to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Taryn Ugrin led the Owls with three goals while Macy Vail, Anna Meserve, Jordan Fisher, and Allie Palmer had two a piece with Vail and Palmer adding an assist each. Abigail Nolan had a goal and an assist. Bailey McDermott and Amelia Mansfield each had an assist. In goal, Caelan Connors had 15 saves.
The Greyhounds struck first and struck twice, less than five minutes into the first quarter. Under a minute after their second goal, Taryn Ugrin scored the Owls first goal and sparked the offense scoring six unanswered goals. Ugrin then scored with 2:57 before Anna Meserve scored on a free position shot and then Allie Palmer scored, both with about a minute left to play.
Jordan Fisher scored about three minutes into the second quarter and was assisted by Bailey McDermott. Ugrin then scored another goal to earn herself a hat trick. With under three minutes to go in the quarter, Assumption scored two goals to cut Southern Connecticut's lead to two.
It was a quiet start to the third quarter until Allie Palmer scored with 8:08 left to go, but the Greyhounds scored quickly after. Meserve then scored her second goal of the game with less than six minutes to go. The Owls leading scorer, Macy Vail, scored her first goal of the game after connecting with Palmer to bring the lead to four.
Assumption scored three-straight goals less than three minutes into the fourth quarter to make it a one-goal game. Vail connected with Abigail Nolan for her second goal of the night before Fisher scored another goal assisted by Amelia Mansfield to put them up three. Not too long after, though, Assumption tacked on another goal before Nolan scored less than a minute later to make it 12 to 9. The Greyhounds did not let up and for the second time in the fourth quarter, they scored three consecutive goals to tie the game. Assumption then took the lead, 13 to 12, for the first time since the first quarter after scoring with 3:09 left to play and scored the final goal of the game with under two minutes to play to get the win.
The Owls will host Adelphi on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m. for their final regular-season home game of the year.
