WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse fell to #20 Bentley University, 18-12 on Wednesday night. The Owls dropped an overall record of 8-6 and an NE10 record of 3-5, while the Falcons improved an overall record of 10-4 and an NE10 record of 7-2.
Allie Welder led the Owls with a career-high of four goals and four points.
Jordan Fisher and
Allie Palmer both scored three goals, Fisher totaled three points as
Allie Palmer added an assist and had four points against the Falcons.
Macy Vail scored two goals, had an assist and totaled three points. In goal,
Caelan Connors made five saves against Bentley.
Connors and Welder had a team-best of two ground ball pick-ups.
Breya Montague,
Amelia Mansfield,
Auserehl Mazzuli and Welder each caused a turnover. Mansfield led the Owls with four draw controls, while
Abigail Nolan,
Bailey McDermott and Vail all won two draws against the Falcons.
In the first quarter, from the first draw, both teams knew it would be a battle. The Falcons and Owls went back and forth down the field until Bentley broke through the gridlock with their first goal of the day, with eight minutes left. Southern had a few chances on goal but nothing went into the back of the net until
Macy Vail scored from the free position to tie the game up at 1-1, with four minutes left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Bentley scored within the first minute of play; to take a 2-1 lead and minutes later, they would score their third goal. It was
Macy Vail, who scored her second goal of the game, to cut the Falcons' lead to one. Seconds later,
Allie Welder, with an assist by
Allie Palmer, scored the game-tying goal.
Within the same minute,
Allie Palmer fought through the Bentley defense and scored her first goal of the game, to put the Owls up 4-3. Nonetheless, the Falcons didn't go away as they scored two goals, to take the lead back. Southern Connecticut created a chance to score from the free-position, and they capitalized on it with
Jordan Fisher scoring her first goal of the day. The Owls and Falcons headed into halftime with a 5-5 scoreline.
In the third quarter, Bentley scored their sixth goal of the game, to retake the lead. Seconds later,
Allie Welder recorded her second goal of the day, from the free position, to tie the score at 6-6. However, with momentum on their side, the Falcons put eight goals into the back of the net, to take a 14-6 lead going into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, the Owls looked to make a comeback as it started with a goal by
Allie Palmer, her second of the game. Then, Welder recorded her third goal and a minute later, Fisher scored her second of the day, to cut the Bentley lead, to just five goals. However, the Falcons responded with four goals, to extend their lead to 18-9.
Southern Connecticut didn't go away as
Allie Welder scored her fourth goal, with an assist by Vail. With less than a minute left, Fisher scored her third goal and then
Allie Palmer scored the Owls' final goal of the game. Despite the Owls' three unanswered goals to finish the game, Bentley clinched the 18-12 victory over Southern.
The Owls will return to NE10 action at Jess Dow Field on Saturday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. against #10 Adelphi University, in their final home game of the regular season.
