NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse was defeated by #10 Adelphi University, 19-11 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 8-7 and an NE10 record of 3-6 while the Panthers improved to an overall record of 13-3 and an NE10 record of 9-1.
Macy Vail led the Owls with four goals and a total of five points.
Allie Palmer scored two goals and totaled three points. Five Owls scored a goal:
Allie Welder,
Rebecca Sibley,
Abigail Nolan,
Jordan Fisher and
Taryn Ugrin.
Maddox Burton, Palmer, Sibley and Vail all had an assist. In goal,
Caelan Connors made 10 saves against the Panthers.
Sammy Sleve had a team-best of two ground ball pick ups. Six Owls led the team with a caused turnover:
Amelia Mansfield,
Auserehl Mazzuli,
Gabriella Smith, Sleve, Sibley and Nolan.
Amelia Mansfield won a career-best of 10 draws, as
Allie Welder won three and
Bailey McDermott won two draw controls against Adelphi.
In the first quarter, Southern Connecticut got on the board first with a goal by
Macy Vail, with an assist by
Allie Palmer. A minute later,
Jordan Fisher threw a shot into the back of the net for a goal with an assist by Vail. Then,
Allie Palmer scored her first goal of the day, to put the Owls up, 3-0, just five minutes into play. However, the Panthers answered back with four goals to end the quarter, with a scoreline of 4-3 over the Owls.
In the second quarter, Adelphi used their momentum to score nine goals throughout the 15 minutes of play. Southern added two goals to their total, from
Allie Palmer and
Taryn Ugrin as the Panthers took a 13-5 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter,
Macy Vail recorded her second goal and third goal of the day, with an assist by
Maddox Burton on the second goal. The Panthers scored three more goals, to add onto their double-digit lead of 16-7. In the fourth quarter, Adelphi scored two goals in the early part of the quarter; however, with the Owls looking to make a comeback,
Allie Welder scored her first of the day, then a few minutes later,
Abigail Nolan scored her first goal of the game. With two minutes left,
Rebecca Sibley recorded her first goal and then,
Macy Vail scored her final goal of the game, with an assist by Sibley, to bring the score to 19-11. The Panthers held on to take the 19-11 victory over Southern Connecticut.
The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. in Sparkill, N.Y. in a non-conference matchup against Saint Thomas Aquinas College. Southern will then travel to Springfield, Mass. to face NE10 opponent, American International College at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 in the regular season finale.
