SPARKILL, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas, 25-1 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
Maddox Burton recorded a career-best of seven assists, which is the most assists in a single-game in program history. The Spartans dropped to an overall record of 4-12. The Owls improved to an overall record of 9-7, which ties the program-record of most wins in a season. 14 different Owls scored a goal or more in the fifth game this season where Southern Connecticut has scored 20 plus goals.
Amelia Mansfield scored a team-best and career-best of four goals and had five points while
Abigail Nolan recorded three goals. Six Owls scored two goals:
Rebecca Sibley,
Macy Vail,
Hannah Hathway,
Allie Welder,
Sofia Zumbrunn and
Taryn Ugrin. Six Owls scored a goal:
Maddox Burton,
McKenzie Schindler,
Jordan Fisher,
Gabriella Smith,
Bailey McDermott and
Allie Palmer.
Maddox Burton had a career-best and program-best of seven assists and eight points. Burton became the new program-leader in the most assists in a single-game after Bayleigh Takacs and Kennedy Sherman were tied for the most assists in a single-game, with five assists. In addition, seven assists are the most assists in a single-game by a individual player in the Northeast-10 Conference this season. In a single-season in program history, Burton has recorded the second most assists in a season with 31.
Macy Vail,
Allie Palmer and
Jordan Fisher all totaled two assists while Mansfield, Sibley, Hathway, Welder, Zumbrunn and Ugrin all added an assist.
Allie Welder led the Owls with seven ground ball pick-ups while
Breya Montague recorded three ground ball pick-ups. Welder also had a team-best of three caused turnovers. Mansfield led the team with seven draws, as Welder won five draws, Sibley and McDermott both won three draws, and
McKenzie Schindler won her first career draw control.
In goal, in the first half,
Caelan Connors made four saves, against seven shots faced and only allowed one goal and in the second half,
Kiley Nolan made three saves. After the first few minutes of the first quarter, Connors and Nolan with the help of the Owls' defense shutout the Spartans for the remainder of the game.
In the first quarter,
Amelia Mansfield scored the Owls' first goal of the day, with an assist by
Jordan Fisher, just 30 seconds in. The Spartans answered with their first goal of the game; however, Southern responded with their second goal, scored by
Macy Vail and assisted by
Maddox Burton, to take a 2-1 lead, within the first three minutes of the game. Then, Vail recorded her second goal, with an assist by
Taryn Ugrin. Shortly after, Mansfield threw a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the game, with an assist by
Hannah Hathway.
The scoring momentum for the Owls didn't stop there as
Bailey McDermott recorded her first goal with an assist by Vail. 10 seconds later,
Allie Welder had her first goal of the game.
Taryn Ugrin scored her first goal, with another assist by Burton while shortly after
Abigail Nolan scored back-to-back goals, with both goals assisted by Burton. Closing out the first 15 minutes,
Allie Palmer scored her first goal of the game and then Burton scored her first goal of the day, with an assist by Vail, as they put up a 11-1 lead over Saint Thomas Aquinas.
In the second quarter, Ugrin recorded her second goal, with an assist by Palmer. Then,
Sofia Zumbrunn had her first goal of the game, with seven minutes left. After that,
Hannah Hathway scored her first goal, with an assist by Burton.
Jordan Fisher got on the scoresheet for the Owls, with an assist by Zumbrunn, as they headed into halftime with a 15-1 lead over the Spartans.
In the third quarter, Mansfield scored her third goal of the game, with an assist from Burton. Then, Zumbrunn scored her second of the day, with an assist by Mansfield. Minutes later, Nolan scored her third goal, with another assist by Burton. Then, Welder recorded another goal, with an assist by Palmer.
Rebecca Sibley scored her first goal of the game, to put the Owls ahead 20-1, heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Gabriella Smith scored her first goal of the day in the first three minutes of play. From the free position, Mansfield scored her fourth and final goal of the day. Hathway scored another goal, with an assist by Fisher as Sibley, with an assist from Welder, scored shortly after.
McKenzie Schindler scored her first career-goal as an Owl, with an assist by Sibley, to round out the scoresheet for Southern Connecticut as they clinched a 25-1 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, April 23 at 5:00 p.m. in Springfield, Massachusetts in the NE10 regular season finale against American International.
