SCSU Women's Lacrosse Defeats Southern New Hampshire, 15-11

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Southern New Hampshire, 15-11 on Wednesday night in an NE10 matchup. The Owls improved to an overall record of 7-3 and an NE10 record of 2-2 while the Penmen dropped to an overall record of 5-5 and an NE10 record of 1-3. Four Owls scored a team-best of three goals against Southern New Hampshire. 


Macy Vail, Anna Meserve, Bailey McDermott and Allie Palmer scored a team-best of three goals. Meserve, McDermott and Vail all totaled four points, while Palmer who added two assists, had five points for the day. Jordan Fisher scored two goals and Maddox Burton scored a goal against the Penmen. In goal, Caelan Connors tied a season-best of 15 saves for Southern Connecticut. 

Palmer and Burton led the Owls with two assists, as four players had one assist: Taryn Ugrin, Vail, Meserve and McDermott. Breya Montague led the team with three ground ball pick ups, as seven players picked up a ground ball: Sammy Sleve, Allie Welder, Gabriella Smith, Auserehl Mazzuli, Connors, Fisher and McDermott. Montague and Ugrin caused a team-best of two turnovers. Amelia Mansfield had a team-best of four draws, while Rebecca Sibley and Anna Meserve both won three draws, Welder won two draws and Abigail Nolan won a draw control. 

In the first quarter, Allie Palmer scored her first goal of the day, with an assist by Macy Vail, to put the Owls up 1-0, in the first minute of play. Two minutes later, Macy Vail scored her first goal, with an assist from Palmer, as the Owls took a two-goal lead. However, Southern New Hampshire responded with their first goal of the game. After that, Vail recorded her second goal of the game, with another assist by Palmer. To finish out the quarter, Palmer scored her second goal of the game, with an assist by Maddox Burton, to put the Owls up, 4-1. 

In the second quarter, the Penmen got on the board first; but Jordan Fisher, with an assist from Bailey McDermott, got Southern back on the board with their fifth goal of the day. Southern New Hampshire answered that with their third goal of the game. Then, Vail recorded her third goal to extend the Owls' lead as seconds later, the Penmen scored their fourth goal. Bailey McDermott scored back-to-back goals for Southern Connecticut, with the second goal assisted by Burton, to extend their lead going into halftime with a scoreline of 8-4. 

In the third quarter, the Penmen recorded their fifth goal of the day; however, McDermott scored her third goal of the game. A minute later, Burton threw a impressive shot behind her back and into the goal. to score her first of the day, extending the Owls' advantage to 10-5. Southern New Hampshire recorded two goals to end the third quarter, as the scoreline was still in favor of the Owls, 10-7. 

In the fourth quarter, Anna Meserve dominated the free-position, as she was 3-for-3 from the spot. Her three goals' and Allie Palmer's goal, with an assist by Taryn Ugrin, helped Southern Connecticut extend their lead to 14-7. Fisher would score the Owls' final goal of the game, as their lead grew to 15-7, with seven minutes left. The Penmen looked to make a comeback as they scored four goals in the final minutes; nonetheless, Southern Connecticut kept hold of the lead and clinched the 15-11 victory.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, April 5 on Senior Day, as they will celebrate Amelia Mansfield, Jordan Fisher, Gabriella Smith and Heather Pritchard in an NE10 matchup against Franklin Pierce at 1:00 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
