SCSU Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With Come-From-Behind Win At Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse came-from-behind to defeat Jefferson, 8-7, in its 2026 season opener in Philadelphia, Pa. With the win, the Owls open the year at 1-0 while the Rams start the season at 0-1.

Madison Olmstead and Abigail Nolan led the Owls with two goals each while Nolan's second goal stood as the difference in the Owls win. Macy Vail, Hannah Hathway, Anna Meserve and Bailey McDermott all score in the Owls win while Sofia Boucher had an assist.

Southern trailed early with Jefferson leading by four goals, 5-1, with 12:30 to go in the second quarter. From there, Southern outscored the Rams, 7-2, to pull out the shocker on the road.

Jefferson opened the game with a 3-1 lead through the first quarter. After the Rams scored the first goal of the game, Bailey McDermott scored Southern's first goal of the season to tie it up with two minutes to play. Jefferson scored twice in the final 1:18 to take the two-goal lead into the first break. The Rams opened the second quarter with back to back goals in the first three minutes to take a four-goal lead, 5-1.

The Owls scored two unanswered tallies – from Madison Olmstead and Hannah Hathway – to pull into halftime trailing by two goals.

Coming out of the break, Jefferson pushed its lead back to three goals, 6-3, in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter. The Owls then rattled off five unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead with 10 minutes to play. Macy Vail scored to cut the lead to two, 6-4, with 12:37 to play in the third before Olmstead and Nolan both scored on free-position attempts in the last 2:22 of the period to send it to the fourth tied, 6-6.

In the fourth, Meserve scored off a pass from Boucher to give Southern a 7-6 lead before Nolan scored her second free-position goal with 10 to play. Jefferson scored to make it 8-7, and couldn't capitalize in the closing seconds.

Southern's game at Holy Family that was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 22 was postponed due to impending weather. The Owls are schedule to host Felician on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
