SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut split a non-conference doubleheader at Mercy, losing the first game, 6-1, before bouncing back with an 8-2 win in the second game. With the split, the Owls went to 3-6 overall while Mercy is now 6-4.

Jace Alvino put together the seven-inning perfect game in the nightcap for his first win of the season. Alvino held Mercy to two runs on five hits while striking out five over seven innings. Bam Talavera and Matt Scalia both had three hits in the doubleheader. In the second game, Devin Pelletier was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple with two RBI while Brennan Staubley was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Spencer Chard also saw a 2-for-3 day in the Game 2 while scoring three runs. 



In the first game, Southern scored its lone run on a RBI double by Bam Talavera that scored Devin Pelletier and gave the Owls and early 1-0 lead. Talavera was 2-for-4 while freshman Matt Scalia was 2-for-3. Bailey Goss logged five strong innings and took the hard-luck loss after scattering eight hits while holding Mercy to one unearned run. Goss also had a career-best eighth strikeouts in the game. Cody Heselton pitched the final three innings in relief.

In the second game, Southern scored in the first four innings of the game, including a three-run 3rd inning, to take a 6-2 lead. In the 1st, Spencer Chard and Zaid Vohra led off the game with back-to-back singles before Pelletier drew a walk. Chard scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

In the 2nd, Aidan Hyams walked to lead off the inning before Alex Cappellucci bunted him over. Scalia then singled to center field to score Hyams from second as the Owls took a 2-0 lead.

In the 3rd, Brennan Staubley singled to left-center with one out before Talavera drove him in with a triple to left-center. After Jake Chacho worked a walk, Hyams bunted Talavera home before Cappellucci singled up the middle to score Chacho and give the Owls a 5-0 lead.

After Mercy struck for two in the bottom of the 3rd, the Owls made it 6-2 when Chard singled then stole second and scored on Pelletier's double. Pelletier also drove in Chard in the 6th with a two-out triple before scoring on a single by Staubley to give Southern an 8-2 lead.

Southern is scheduled to face University of Bridgeport in a four-game series on Mar. 6-8. The Owls are slated to travel to Bridgeport on Friday, March 6 at 3 p.m. before hosting the Purple Knights on Saturday, March 7 for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The series is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday, March 8 at 12 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
