NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost to Mercy, 15-14, in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Southern dropped to 3-1 overall while Mercy improved to 5-1.
Anna Meserve led the Owls with two goals and an assist for three points while also recording a team-high 10 draw controls. Macy Vail and Abigail Nolan both scored three goals while Taryn Ugrin scored twice. Madison Olmstead had a goal and an assist while Rebecca Sibley, Allie Welder and Bailey McDermott found the back of the cage as well. Welder also added six draw controls.
Meserve put the Owls on the board in the first minute of the game before Mercy scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. Southern countered with four-straight goals, with Nolan, McDermott, Vail and Welder all converting to give Southern a 5-3 lead. Mercy added another goal to end the first quarter with Southern leading, 5-4.
Nolan made it 6-4 in the first 37 seconds of the second quarter but Mercy answered with a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 advantage with 4:55 to go in the half. Ugrin and Olmstead both scored to tie the game before Mercy converted with 2:06 to go to head into halftime with a 9-8 lead.
Southern regained the lead when Vail and Nolan both scored to start the third, but Mercy answered with two more goals to regain an 11-10 advantage after three quarters. In the 4th, Sibley scored the game-tying goal before Vail scored a man-up goal on a pass from Olmstead to give Southern a 12-11 lead with 12:42 to play. Mercy kept coming back, scoring twice to regain the lead, 13-12, before the two teams traded goals down the stretch, with Ugrin and Meserve both scoring, before Mercy's goal with 1:28 to play proved to be the difference.
Southern is back in action when it travels to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, March 14 to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Confernece matchup at 1 p.m.The Owls game against the Penmen is the first of six-straight games away from New Haven as the Owls don't have another home game until Wednesday, April 8.
