NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Southern New Hampshire, 14-13, in an NE10 matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Penmen dropped to an overall record of 3-4 and an NE10 record of 1-1. The Owls improved to an overall record of 4-1 and an NE10 record of 2-0.
Anna Meserve scored a team-best of four goals and had four points against the Penmen.
Rebecca Sibley,
Macy Vail,
Allie Welder and
Sofia Boucher all had two goals.
Breya Montague and
Abigail Nolan scored a goal for Southern Connecticut.
Hannah Hathway and
Macy Vail both had an assist. Montague and
Caelan Connors both had a team-best of four ground ball pick-ups.
McKenzie Schindler, Vail and Montague all had a team-best of two caused turnovers.
Allie Welder won a team-best of four draw controls. In goal,
Caelan Connors made 11 saves and got her third win of the season.
In the first quarter,
Allie Welder started the scoring off for the Owls, in the first two minutes of play. The Penmen responded with a goal, but Southern Connecticut scored back-to-back goals from
Anna Meserve and
Rebecca Sibley. Southern New Hampshire scored their second goal of the game; however, minutes later, Meserve scored her second goal of the day, to put the Owls up 4-2, heading into the second.
In the second quarter, Southern Connecticut scored three straight goals, from Nolan, Vail and Welder, as the Owls took a 7-2 lead. The Penmen put a goal on the board before
Sofia Boucher recorded back-to-back goals, within a minute for the Owls. Southern New Hampshire scored their fourth goal of the game, but Southern Connecticut stayed in control with a 9-4 lead, going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Southern New Hampshire scored back-to-back goals to start the second half of play. Nonetheless,
Anna Meserve scored two more goals for the Owls, then
Macy Vail recorded her first goal of the day. The Penmen added another goal to their total, but the Owls remained up 12-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Penmen continued their momentum from the third quarter with two goals scored as Southern New Hampshire got within three of Southern Connecticut.
Rebecca Sibley and
Breya Montague added goals to the Owls' total, but Southern New Hampshire recorded four more goals, to get within a goal of Southern Connecticut, with six minutes left. Nonetheless, the Owls held on to defeat the Penmen, 14-13, for their fourth victory of the season.
The Owls will travel to South Carolina to play against non-conference opponents, Dominican University of California on Monday, March 16 at 11:00 am and Converse University on Wednesday, March 18 at 4:00 pm.
