SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Dominican University of California, 13-11 in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon. The Penguins dropped to an overall record of 7-2 while the Owls improved to an overall record of 5-1. Also,
Macy Vail scored the 100th goal of her career, as she is the seventh player in program history to score 100 goals.
Macy Vail and
Anna Meserve scored a team-best of three goals and totaled a team-best of four points for the Owls.
Allie Welder had two goals, as
Sofia Boucher,
Alyssa Leonardi,
Amelia Tennis,
Bailey McDermott and
Taryn Ugrin all scored a goal.
In goal,
Caelan Connors got her fourth victory of the season and tied her season best of 11 saves.
Abigail Nolan had a team-best of three assists,
Rebecca Sibley led the Owls with three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers as Tennis also had a team-best of three caused turnovers against the Penguins.
In the first quarter, the Penguins started off the game with multiple shots on goal; but
Caelan Connors made three saves in the first three minutes of play for the Owls.
Macy Vail scored the first goal of the day, with an assist by
Abigail Nolan. Less than a minute later,
Bailey McDermott had her first goal of the game, with an assist by
Anna Meserve.
Dominican scored their first of the game; however,
Allie Welder recorded her first goal of the day. Then,
Amelia Tennis scored the first goal of her career, to put the Owls, up 4-1. The Penguins put another goal on the board; nonetheless,
Anna Meserve scored to extend the Owls' lead to 5-2.
In the second quarter,
Anna Meserve and
Allie Welder, both scored their second goals of the game, as the Owls went up 7-2, early on. However, Dominican didn't go away as they recorded four unanswered goals and headed into halftime, down by a goal to Southern Connecticut.
In the third quarter, the Penguins evened the game up at 7-7, then, minutes later, Dominican took an 8-7 lead, with eight minutes left. The Owls responded quickly and tied the game, at 8-8, with a goal by
Taryn Ugrin then a moment later,
Anna Meserve scored her third goal of the day, to put Southern Connecticut in the lead, 9-8. After that, the Owls continued with their momentum as
Macy Vail scored back-to-back goals, to put Southern Connecticut, up by three goals.
Dominican stayed in the game as they scored their third goal of the quarter and got within two goals of the Owls, with five minutes left.
Alyssa Leonardi had her first goal of the game, to help Southern, go up 12-9, heading into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Dominican looked to make a comeback as they recorded back-to-back goals, early, to get within a goal of Southern Connecticut. The Penguins created pressure on the Owls' defense; but
Caelan Connors made three straight saves, to keep Southern in control.
Sofia Boucher scored her first goal of the game, as she extended the lead to 13-11, with three minutes left to play. Dominican tried to put goals on the board before time ticked down; nonetheless, the Owls held on and got the 13-11 victory over the Penguins.
The Owls will play Converse University at 4:00 pm in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Wednesday, March 18.
