SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Converse, 17-6, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening. The Valkyries dropped to an overall record of 3-5, while the Owls improved to an overall record of 6-1. Nine different Owls scored a goal in the victory against Converse. In addition, goalkeeper
Caelan Connors recorded the 500th save of her career and is the second keeper in program history to make 500+ saves for the Owls.
Macy Vail and
Abigail Nolan had a team-best of three goals, as Vail totaled a team-best of four points.
Madison Olmstead,
Sofia Boucher,
Anna Meserve and
Bailey McDermott all scored two goals.
Rebecca Sibley,
Breya Montague and
Nicolette Spotlow each scored a goal against the Valkyries.
Maddox Burton had a team-best of three assists, while
Allie Welder,
Lauren MacLean,
Auserehl Mazzulli, Meserve and Vail all picked up a team-best of two ground balls. Welder also led the Owls with three caused turnovers and six draws. In goal,
Caelan Connors got her sixth victory of the season, with seven saves.
Kiley Nolan added three saves in goal for Southern, in the second half against Converse.
In the first quarter,
Macy Vail scored the first goal of the day for the Owls, just 30 seconds in, with an assist from
Maddox Burton. However, Converse responded with two goals, to take a 2-1 lead. Southern kept working and scored three straight goals, from
Anna Meserve,
Abigail Nolan and
Breya Montague. The Owls went up 4-2, heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter,
Bailey McDermott recorded her first goal of the game, with an assist from Burton, which was her second assist of the day.
Rebecca Sibley then scored her first goal of the day and extended the Owls' lead to 6-2. From then, Southern continued with their strong offensive momentum as they added five goals on the board, before the half ended.
Abigail Nolan scored two more goals, while
Madison Olmstead, Meserve and Vail all scored for the Owls. Southern headed into halftime with a 11-3 advantage over Converse.
In the third quarter, the Owls started their scoring off with a goal from
Macy Vail, within the first minute of play. The Valkyries added a goal to their total; however, the Southern defense stood strong while the offense answered with a goal from
Sofia Boucher and the first goal of the season from
Nicolette Spotlow, as they went up 14-4, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter,
Sofia Boucher scored her second goal of the game for the Owls.
Bailey McDermott added her second goal of the day, as she helped Southern, grow their lead to 16-4. Converse would score back-to-back goals; nonetheless, in goal,
Kiley Nolan made three impressive saves, in the last few minutes of play before
Madison Olmstead scored her second goal of the day. As time ticked down, the Owls stayed in control and Southern Connecticut defeated Converse, 17-6 for their sixth victory of the season.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, March 21 at 3:30 pm in Rockville Centre, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Molloy.
