SCSU Softball Sweeps Post University in First Doubleheader of the Season

Box Score Waterbury, CONN-- SCSU Softball swept their first double header of the season in a non-conference match-up against Post University. With the wins, the Owls improve to 2-0, while the Eagles fall to 0-2.

Ashley Lewis and Giselle DeLutri both picked up wins on the mound for the Owls. Lewis tossed 5 innings allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. Lewis would return in relief in the second game throwing one scoreless inning. DeLutri threw 5 innings allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out 13. In relief, Kate Nickerson threw two innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 and picking up her first save of the season. Moira Collins pitched one inning allowing zero runs on two hits.

Offensively, Cheyenne LaTouche had five hits and four RBI in the double header and Gianna Ianquinto had two hits and three RBI.



Game 1: SCSU 11, Post 5
The Owls won game one by a score of 11-5. Ashley Lewis got the start tossing 5 innings allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four on route to her first win of the season. Coming in relief was Kate Nickerson who threw two innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 and picking up her first save of the season.

Offensively for the Owls, Cheyenne LaTouche led the way going 4-5 with 2 RBI. Karley Austin went 1-3 while also tallying 2 RBI with 2 walks. Izzy Ingersoll, Brianna Pearson, Gianna Ianquinto, Peyton Fillippone and Olivia Young all had 1 RBI.

 Southern got their scoring started in the second frame when they scored their first two runs of the game. Ianquinto scored the first on a throwing error. The following batter Olivia Young picked up her first RBI of the season on a single to center field scoring Fillippone giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

 Post answered in the bottom of second with a run of their own, the Owls continued scoring in the third when Fillippone walked scoring Brianna Pearson bringing the lead to 3-1.

 In the fourth, the Owls offense continued to fire on all cylinders. Ingersoll got the scoring started with a triple scoring Austin. Later on in the inning, Ianquinto singled scoring Ingersoll and bringing the Owls lead to 5-1.

From there, the offense went quiet for a few innings, until the top of the seventh. The Owls offense exploded for six runs. The scoring started when Austin singled to center field scoring Young and LaTouche bringing the lead to 7-3.

The Owls would score their next two runs on wild pitches that scored both Iris Rooney and Austin bringing the Owls lead to 9-3. LaTouche would end the owls scoring for the inning when she smacked a double to left field scoring Christina DeNovellis and Pearson bringing the lead to 11-3.

Post would tally two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Owls would hold on for the 11-5 win securing their first win of the season.
 
Game two: SCSU 7, Post 5
In game two, Giselle DeLutri got the start where she tossed 5 innings allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out 13. In relief for the Owls Moira Collins had her first appearance as an Owl. Collins went one inning allowing zero runs on two hits. Lewis came in for the final inning and allowed no runs on no hits.

The owls got the scoring started in the third inning, when with two outs Sophia Angiolini doubled scoring Ingersoll bringing the Owls lead to 1-0. The following inning, the Owls added another when LaTouche scored on a throwing error extending the Owls lead to 2-0.

In the fifth, the Owls offense broke the game open scoring five runs. The Owls scoring started when Austin scored on an error, after reaching base on a walk and advancing to second on an error. The Owls would continue to pile it on when Ianquinto singled scoring both Pearson and Ingersoll bringing the Owls lead to 5-0.

The fifth inning scoring would conclude when LaTouche tripled clearing the base runners of Ianquinto and Angiolini bringing the Owls lead to 7-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Post added two runs cutting the Owls lead to 7-2. In the bottom of the sixth, post would another three runs cutting the lead to 7-5.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with post threatening with a runner on third. Lewis came on in relief. Lewis retired the Eagles on three straight ground outs giving the Owls the 7-5 win.

Southern Connecticut travels to Space Coast, FL on Friday March 13 for a pair of non conference match ups against Minnesota State University, Mankato at 12:15pm and Northern State University at 2:30 PM.
