SCSU Women's Lacrosse Falls To Bentley In NE10 Quarterfinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse lost to Bentley, 17-12, in a Northeast 10 Conference Championship Quarterfinal matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 12-5 overall while Bentley improved to 8-8.

Macy Vail led the Owls with three goals and an assist for a team-high four points while Taryn Ugrin and Bailey McDermott both had two goals and an assist, each. Madison Olmstead had a goal and an assist while Mia Hartmann, Rebecca Sibley, Sofia Boucher and Abigail Nolan also scored for Southern.

Southern fell behind early as the Falcons rattled off six unanswered goals over the game's first eight minutes. McDermott scored off a pass from Vail to get the Owls on the board but Bentley added another goal before the end of the 1st quarter.

Southern came out of the first intermission to score three-straight goals and cut Bentley's lead to 7-4. Vail scored twice on assists from Ugrin and Maddox Burton before Ugrin scored off a pass from McDermott. Bentley added two more goals before Nolan converted on a pass from Olmstead to send the Owls into halftime trailing, 9-5.

Southern made the adjustments at the break to mount a comeback in the 3rd quarter as it outscored Bentley, 3-1, through the 6:58 mark. Vail scored off a pass from Breya Montague but Bentley answered. Hartman and Olmstead then scored as the Owls pulled within two goals with just under seven minutes to go in the period. Bentley added two more goals with just under three minutes to play to head to the 4th with a 12-8 lead.

Two more goals in the 4th quarter's first three minutes gave Bentley four-straight goals and a 14-8 lead. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way with McDermott, Sibley and Boucher scoring for the Owls.

Should the Owls' season end with the loss in the NE10 Tournament, as the Owls were ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Regional Rankings, Vail's season would end with 43 goals and 17 assists for 60 points, making her just the ninth player in program history with a 60-point season and the second player to do it twice. In two seasons with the Owls, she scored 92 goals and totaled 43 assists for 138 points which ranks sixth in program history. Nolan wrapped up a senior season that saw her total career-highs in goals (37), assists (13) and points (50). As a team, the Owls broke the program record with 12 wins and hosted a conference tournament game for the first time in program history. The Owls were also nationally ranked for the first time in program history.
