SCSU Volleyball Sweeps Queens and Franklin Pierce To Improve To 6-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University volleyball made the most of a full day at Pelz Gym, sweeping Queens College in the morning and Franklin Pierce in the afternoon to cap a 2-0 day and improve to 6-1 overall.

The Owls defeated Queens, 3-0, in the 10 a.m. opener, hitting .257 as a team with 39 kills, and returned to dispatch Franklin Pierce, 3-0, behind a .274 hitting percentage and 48 kills.

In the opener Queens jumped to a 2-0 lead before Sarah Stark sparked a 4-0 run with three straight kills off sets from Kimi Mitchell. Southern stretched it to 9-5 behind two kills from Kerrigan Habing and a service ace from Marisabelle Sias, who finished with two aces in the set.



After Queens cut it to 16-12, Sias served three straight points, including an ace and two blocks from Stark and Maria Martinez, to make it 20-12. Stark closed the set with two more blocks and a kill to give Southern a 25-15 win in set one. Stark hit .600 in the match with nine kills on 15 swings and no errors, adding four blocks.

Set two was cleaner for both teams. Queens hit .290 with 10 kills and only one error, but Southern answered with 14 kills and a .216 clip. Habing led the way with 10 kills for the match and added two aces and eight digs. Sophia Guzman was efficient off the bench, posting six kills on eight swings for a .750 hitting percentage, while Sydney Bennett added five kills on .333 hitting.

Mitchell directed the offense with 24 assists and four digs, while Charly Williams added 10 assists and a service ace. Sarah Henault chipped in seven digs and three assists. Southern hit .368 in the third set with 17 kills and just three errors to put the match away. The Owls finished with advantages in points (49-36), kills (39-28), blocks (5-2), assists (38-27) and digs (42-31).

The momentum carried into the afternoon against Franklin Pierce (2-4). Southern set the tone early in set one, hitting .278 with 18 kills. Bennett and Sias took over, each finishing with 10 kills to lead all players. Bennett was nearly perfect, hitting .588 with 10 kills on 17 attempts and no errors, while adding a solo block. Sias hit .316 with 10 kills on 19 swings.

Habing added eight kills and an ace for 9.5 points, while Mianna Brown came off the bench to hit .500 with five kills. Kimi Mitchell posted another solid all-around effort with 33 assists and eight digs, adding three blocks and four kills on 13 swings.

The Owls were balanced at the service line and defensively. Victoria Pascual led the team with nine digs and two aces, while Camilla Fernandez added two aces and five digs. Mitchell, Stark and Brown combined for seven blocks as Southern limited Franklin Pierce to .065 hitting with just 21 kills and 15 errors on 92 swings.

In the first set, Southern pulled away midway behind a 4-0 run from Habing that included an ace and two kills from Mitchell, building an 11-6 lead before closing 25-18. The second set was tighter early, but Southern closed on a 6-2 run behind Bennett and Sias.

The third set was Southern's most efficient of the day at .351 with 18 kills and five errors. Sias and Bennett combined for seven kills in the final frame as the Owls closed out their second sweep of the day.
On the day, Southern hit .266 across six sets with 87 total kills. Mitchell totaled 57 assists, 12 digs and four blocks in the two matches, while Habing posted 18 kills, three aces and 10 digs. Stark finished the doubleheader with 14 kills on 24 swings and six blocks.

The pair of wins moves Southern to 6-1 in non-conference play. With 10 kills apiece in the nightcap, Bennett and Sias now led a balanced attack that saw six different Owls record at least five kills on the day.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when it hosts Bridgeport at 5 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium.
